Scott views art as a means of communication, a way to visually express ideas and feelings using God’s gift of creativity. Scott currently works almost exclusively in oil on panel or canvas, preferring to paint a variety of subjects in a realistic yet “painterly” way. He prefers to present his interpretation of a subject rather than a photorealistic recreation of it.
Scott graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In the early 1990s he studied oil painting with Shirley of Hermitage, Tennessee and later with Mary Veazie of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Scott has attended oil painting workshops over the years with Jennifer Gennari, Victoria Kalaichi, Mia Bergeron and world renown artist Daniel E. Greene.
He has been influenced by many different artists, beginning with his mother, Carol Ann (Rivenes) Emrick. Other artists include: John Singer Sargent, Diego Velasquez, Michaelangelo, Frank Frazetta, and the lectures of Artist/Teacher Robert Henri.

In 2022 Scott began a partnership with the Church Street Gallery in Murfreesboro Tennessee creating pet portraits for clients. Growing up, there were always multiple dogs and cats in his home. He and his wife also have almost continuously had at least one pet. Knowing the bond that forms between pet and human, Scott strives to capture the personality of the pet in order to elicit those warm feelings even long after the pet has passed. Scott resides in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his wife/best friend of over 30 years.
